Line by Line: An Introduction to Writing Academic Paragraphs and Essays, 2nd Edition, is a practice-oriented, introductory writing textbook designed for first-year university students in Korea who are just learning to write in English. Line by Line assumes that the student has had some basic introduction to and instruction/practice in writing simple English sentences and paragraphs but little formal instruction beyond that. The book is unique in that it was conceived and written by seasoned instructors at one of Korea’s most prestigious universities, who teach required academic writing courses to first-year students. While some of their students have learned writing fundamentals in so-called foreign language high schools in Korea or have studied abroad in international high schools and thus write fairly well, the vast majorityare struggling to write well using formal academic English English. Line by Line is for such students as well as for other Korean second language learners at the beginner, high-beginner or low intermediate level.
