his book traces the history of the idea of developmet since the post-World War period. It addresses the follwing issue:What are the functions of the idea ofdevelopment in contemporary societies? chapter one analyzes post-World War Ⅱ theories of development which have been followed in the past. Chapter two discusses the Third World rejection of this conventional development theory. Chapter three looks carefully into the claim that modernigation theory expresses a uniform process of societal development; that is; a developmental law societies; Chapter four identifies the emergence in the 70's and 80's of critical and suspicious views about development. While the new trend is rather eclectic; it focuses on rejecting any and all naturalistic approaches to societal development. It treats development as if people mattered. And in Chapter five; development strategies are discussed.
